Lori Nix "treehouse" 2004

Lori Nix considers herself a non-traditional photographer, she constructs her subject matter rather then finding it. Her photographs have no digital manipulation, everything we see is done in front of the cameras. Building materials, lighting, issues of scale and space all become significant when you are recreating the world on a table top.
Nix depicts danger and disaster in her photographs but she tempers it with a touch of humor. She grew up in a small town in Kansas; each passing season brought its own drama, winter snow storms, spring floods and tornados, summer drought, etc…As a child Nix viewed these natural disasters as daily excitement . This particular photograph comes from one of her earlier series Lost, titles ” treehouse”. The photographs in this series seem to be more of imaginative disastrous scenes. Although, this particular photograph comes of as magical to me, personally the crowding animals howling at the lit up treehouse however tells us that something else is going on.
