Alex Kisilevich Kallima ” Stick Figure” 2011

on November 9, 2011

Alex Kisilevich explores camouflage in his series, Kallima. The title of the series actually derives from the butterfly kallima inachus, ” The dead leaf butterfly” the butterfly gets its name from its camouflage, which makes it appear to be a dead leaf when its wings are folded together. In Kisilevich’s series Kallima his use of camouflage draws us, the viewer’s attention to the nature of this evolutionary trait. Kisilevich makes it aesthetically pleasing; capturing ordinary images that trick the eye. In “stick figure” at first glance you see a bunch of sticks, but you soon realize the seamless lines of wood paneling joints of a human figure against the patterns of the wood wall.
